Tips for Developing a Family
Healthy Eating Plan
Do an
Assessment
Taking a close look at your family
lifestyle is the first step toward developing a healthy eating plan. If the kids are putting on
extra weight it is time to identify the unhealthy eating habits that are responsible. Most kids
don’t gain a few extra pounds overnight, it occurs over time. If you take a look at family food choices,
calories and exercise levels you can determine which are healthy and which are not healthy, and begin to develop
a healthy eating plan from that. Once you have made an assessment you can decide in what areas your family
lifestyle needs changing immediately.
Get an
Agreement
After performing an assessment of your
family lifestyle you should have a family meeting to discuss your healthy eating plan options. At the
meeting you can discuss with everyone what you have discovered about the family eating habits. You should
have at least a general idea of the changes that will need to be made. Let everyone speak their peace and
contribute to the discussion. You want to have everyone involved right from the beginning. Make no mistake it
will involve sacrifice and work from all family members. Once all the facts are revealed, move to the
planning stage.

Design a
Plan
The planning stage will involve how to
implement a healthy eating plan, the changes and the time frame. It will be easier if the changes in diet are
done over a 2-3 month period instead of all at once. Let everyone get involved in meal planning ideas
including their ideas and favorite healthy foods. Get a planner and put it on the wall
so you can keep all your meals organized. Monthly and yearly planners are readily available so you can plan far
in advance. This will avoid making impulsive decisions and you can save money when shopping as well. You should

Make the
Changes
A common reason for not assessing family
lifestyle and creating a healthy eating plan is the fear that change will be difficult. True that change is
difficult sometimes but in this case the positive benefits of change are substantial, and developing a
healthy eating plan points you in
the right direction. Changes don’t have to be abrupt or done all at once. Small and incremental changes can
be made which will make it easier for everyone to adapt. A gradual shift to more family activity time and
healthier meals can occur over a period of months or even a year. This will make the transition smoother and
easier for everyone.

Build Teamwork
There is strength in numbers and
teamwork will make a healthy eating plan more successful. Take the
time to educate family members so they are truly on board with the idea of a healthy family lifestyle. Explain
the benefits and rewards to be gained by engaging in the plan. Make sure everyone knows their part and how they
can contribute to the new family lifestyle. No one should be left out of the planning and implementing.
Successful efforts should be recognized and rewarded to promote the ongoing efforts of all family
members.
